High Gloss Orange Thrifted Lamp Makeover

Lamp makeovers are fabulous for many reasons:  You can normally find a pretty amazing lamp begging to be transformed for around five bucks. Redoing a lamp is not quite as time consuming as a piece of furniture, so it is more instant gratification and less curses. Upcycling a lamp is also fantastic because you can do something crazy and bold since it is a small part of the space.

In my opinion, if you are new to DIY, lamps are a great place to start.

First things first, decide how you want to protect the parts of the lamp you don't want painted. I just disassemble mine. If it seems to intimidating to you, you could also wrap it with plastic wrap, tape, etc. You would be amazed though at how easy it is to take apart a lamp. I'm not an electrician, so I'll leave it up to Google search and the pros on the best steps.

If you do choose to disassemble, leave your lamp parts in the order you took them apart. That way there is no guess work when putting it all back together again.

Back in the day, this lamp was flash painted an amber-orange. Time had taken its toll and the paint was flaking off. I finished the job with a Scotch scrubber and hot, soapy water.

Everyone shout, "We love spray paint!" I do love it, but is a very temperamental product. Just make sure it is not too hot, cold, humid, windy, rainy--you get the point? When spraying, do many light coatings and do not let it dry completely between. The new coat sticks better if the base layer is slightly tacky.

Ace's orange spray paint is more of a blood orange-has a red base to it. If you want a more yellowy orange, use Krylon's version.

Orange is a really trendy color right and it deserves its place!

Have you incorporated any orange or updated lighting in your spaces?

  1. I love the bright orange! really brought out the life in the lamp. I love it!

  2. Oooh! I love this! I need to find a lamp to spray paint.

  3. i always take a photo of how my project comes apart, helps me when i put it back together
